Rietvlei Nature Reserve

Bronkhorstspruit

Rietvlei Dam was built during the Great Depression and was completed in 1934. Originally the dam was not open to the public and was only proclaimed a nature reserve in 1948.

This 3800ha reserve can support up to 2000 head of game and the dam provides Pretoria with 15% of its water.

A wide variety of game can be spotted including blesbuck, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, steenbuck, springbuck and grey duiker. Other animals you may see includes the brown hyena, ant bear, aardwolf, porcupine and bush pig. Due to previous farming practices, a variety of exotic trees grow in the reserve.

A yacht club is built on the north-western shore, and fishing is permitted on the northern and western shores. There are also many fun hiking trails to enjoy.

Facilities include a bird hide, picnic sites and braai areas.

Open daily from 05h30 to 19h00.
